Freshen Up Your Morning

Fresh Morning Rituals

I don’t know about you, but I find it hard this time of year to get out of bed in the morning, especially when it’s cold and dark. I started looking for some ways to change my morning routine to bring some freshness into my day.

As you may know, I am a big fan of changing up routines. Don’t get me wrong, I love my routines, they help keep me sane and running my life like a well oiled machine. But….. I get bored of the same old anything. So, I like to change things up because I learn something valuable every time. Seriously. I either change my routines to incorporate some of the new things I learned, or I realize that what I have been doing was just fine. Either way, I feel like I grow, expand and keep learning about life and myself. I mean, we women change a lot in our lifetime and why should everything outside of us stay the same?

So how about changing your mornings? If it seems too hard, use the same tips and change a different part of your day. Make it work for you, be creative and do something different so you can feel alive and vibrant.

Looking to what others are doing can leave you feeling overwhelmed, their life is totally different from yours. The skill is to find what works for YOU and what has most meaning and resonance with you. Despite the obsession with life “hacks”, I feel that a successful morning routine honors your needs, energy levels and limitations. Mine changes a lot with the seasons, I find it much more natural to get up early in the summer and have my cup of green tea before the rest of my family wakes up, while in the winter I stay in bed as long as possible and enjoy some peace and quiet after my kids left the house for the day.

The bottom line is:

1. Start your day with an intentional focus and explore what your needs are. This puts you in a better frame of mind, and it’s an easy way to connect and stay connected with yourself for the day.

2. Even just 5 minutes tuning into yourself before jumping out of bed helps you be more centered.

3. Try something different and tune into yourself. Explore everything with the curiosity of what is it that you NEED. Build a fresh routine around your “needs” rather than your “shoulds”. Those will demand your time and attention later on anyways but reflect how your mornings could be different, to leave you feeling deeply alignmed and present.

Some like to get up early to work out, do yoga or meditate. Some like their coffee or tea before the rest of the house wakes up. You know yourself best, experiment and put yourself first so you feel good about your whole day, right from the start.
